The clove plant, or Syzygium aromaticum, is a type of spice native to Indonesia that has been used for centuries. Cloves have the highest essential oil content in the flowers, with the main compound eugenol which has antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Clove plants can live at an altitude of 0 to 1500 meters above sea level, with required rainfall of between 1,500 to 4,500 mm per year and air humidity of 60% – 80%. The benefits of cloves are very diverse, including as a raw material for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, beverage and cigarette industries. Cloves can also be used as a natural preservative in food and drinks, as well as as an ingredient in traditional medicine to treat various health problems, such as toothache, headaches and digestive problems. Apart from that, cloves also have the potential as a natural insecticide to control pests on plants.
